The Freshman Admission Process

Receiving Your Application

When you submit your application, we will bring together the various supporting credentials we have received for you (transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc.) and create a folder with your name on it.

We will confirm receipt of your application both via e-mail and through the mail. If something is missing that is necessary to complete our review, we will contact you and ask you to provide the missing documentation.

The Review Process

Each application is thoroughly reviewed by the Admissions Committee. A large and exceptionally well-qualified applicant pool enables us to enroll a freshman class that is academically talented as well as remarkably diverse. While we have no set "formulas" that we follow when we review applications, we actively seek a mix of students who have a variety of interests, talents, and goals.

We have separate Admissions Committees for each of our undergraduate colleges. Usually, one member of the Committee is responsible for the primary review of your application. When the initial review is completed, the head of that Admissions Committee and perhaps other Committee members will also review your file. The admissions representative responsible for your geographic area of the country or world may also contribute to the review of your application.

Making Our Decision

Admission to the undergraduate schools at NYU is highly selective. Though there are many similarities, the application process differs slightly from school to school. Our evaluation involves a comprehensive review of your academic background, including the relative strength of your high school program and your performance in your courses, and your standardized test scores. We also consider your personal statements and application essay, letters of recommendations submitted on your behalf, and your activities both in school and in your community.

If you are applying for admission to a program that requires a creative review, the results of that review will also be important. Finally, we consider your special talents, alumni affiliation, socioeconomic background, geographic location, and race or ethnicity.
