CAS Special Program Requirements

All Majors

The College of Arts and Science (CAS) requires that students apply for transfer admission only after they have completed a minimum of one full time semester of college course work at another institution. Students who are currently engaged in their first full time semester of college work will not be considered for admission.

Competition for transfer spaces in CAS is significant, and the transfer admissions process is highly selective. The combination of a large number of applications and a relatively small number of available spaces means that our acceptance rate for transfers typically is between ten and fifteen percent for any given semester. The most competitive applicants to the College of Arts and Science have taken all liberal arts courses at their current institution and have earned consistent A to A- grades in their individual college classes, generally with a cumulative GPA of around 3.7 or higher. This number is not a minimum or a cut-off, but rather an indication of how most of our competitive applicants perform. Additionally, competitive students have also generally performed at a very high level in high school with around the same A to A- average overall in their five major academic subjects: English, math, science, history and foreign language.

In addition, there are a number of college courses that students should have completed, or be in the process of completing, before applying. These courses reflect certain areas of our core curriculum and include: expository writing; one quantitative reasoning or natural science class or your choice; and one humanities class of your choice (classes in literature, history, philosophy, art history, etc. are all appropriate for this category).

If you would like to begin class in the fall semester, then we must receive your application by April 1st. If you are interested in beginning in the spring semester, then the deadline is November 1st. Once again, because the competition for the limited number of transfer spaces is so severe, it is in your best interest to have a completed application on file in our office by the deadline. A complete application consists of the following items: your application for admission, final high school transcript with graduation date or GED, official college/university transcript from each school you have attended, SAT scores, and one letter of recommendation from a faculty member at your college or university.
