Standardized Tests

Standardized tests are an important part of the admissions process. All applicants to NYU must provide official test scores from either the SAT, the SAT I examination or the ACT examination. If you have taken these tests more than once we will use your highest combined SAT or SAT I scores or your highest ACT scores in evaluating your application.

If you are applying as a transfer student and you took either one of these tests while in high school, you should not retake the tests now; simply submit the results of your high school SAT I or ACT examinations. If you did not take the SAT, the SAT I or ACT examinations in high school and have been in college less than one year, you must take one of these tests and submit the results as part of your application. International students who are in an area where the ACT Writing Test is not offered must take the SAT.

We encourage all transfer applicants to submit the results of two SAT II Subject Tests.

If English is not your native language and if your primary language of instruction has not been English, you should also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). (Please see the International Applicants Section for additional information.)

Official test scores should be sent directly to NYU from the testing agencies. The NYU code for the College Board (SAT Reasoning Test, SAT I, SAT Subject Tests, SAT II Examinations, and TOEFL) is 2562; the ACT code for NYU is 2838. Please do not use the "Rush Report" option to have a paper copy of your SAT scores sent. We receive daily electronic transmissions of SAT scores, which enables us to update your application automatically and far more quickly than we are able to do if we receive paper score reports.

See the Standardized Testing Q & A section for additional information about the policy.
